Over two million Americans have been diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. Every hour another person is affected.
Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys certain cells in the pancreas so no insulin can be produced. Insulin helps the body to move sugar contained in food into cells throughout our bodies, which we use for energy. Glucose (sugar) stays in the blood of people with diabetes sometimes causing damage to all the organ systems of the body. For this reason, individuals with Type 1 Diabetes must inject insulin (or use an infusion pump), test blood sugar, and watch their food intake to keep blood glucose under control.
Fortunately, researchers are discovering new ways to treat diabetes, improving the lives of countless people living with Type 1 Diabetes. These individuals remain positive and hopeful even when they are faced with adversity. They display courage and strength all the while assisting with their treatment and inspiring others to take control and achieve… proving what they can accomplish living with diabetes!
